Summer fun

I love summer. Not to say I don’t enjoy winter in Canada. I’ve learned to ski (if you call what I do skiing!) and there’s nothing like a outing across a frozen lake when the sun is shining.

But, my heart belongs to summer. Ah, summer. What’s not to love? warm temperatures, alfresco living, cycling, hiking, wearing light clothes instead of being bundled in multiple layers.

After a long, bitter winter, I impatiently wait for those first warm days. As soon as the temperatures go above 10 Celsius, I open the sunroof so I can start enjoying those first warm rays. I also love the feeling of wearing short sleeves for the first time each spring. Sure, my skin is so white that it practically glows in the dark. Who cares? The warm sun on my skin feels so good.

And then there’s my garden. Every year, I anxiously wait to see what pops up first. It’s always a surprise. The squirrels tend to help themselves to whatever tulip bulbs I plans. Damn rodents! Yet, every year, my garden is simply delightful. Isn’t is wonderful how plants spring to life after a 6 month hibernation?

Even food tastes better when eaten outside. The recipes are simpler, prepared with fresh, local ingredients and boy are they ever good.

For many Canadians, summer just isn’t summer unless you get to escape to a cottage. We’re very lucky to have a humble little cottage. Unfortunately, it’s not on a lake. In spite of the lack of water, I still love spending time there. The fresh air, the birds chirping, and the long walks are simply divine. And sleeping underneath an open window with fresh country air on your head is the best feeling. No insomnia at the cottage.

I’m also very blessed to have a dear friend who for the past few years has invited me to her family cottage. This one is on a lake! And what a lake! The most stunning sunsets! This is where I’m headed later today. I love spending time with my buddy and her family. We go for long walks, eat like royalty, drink lots of wine, talk, laugh, and solve the world’s problems. This week restores my soul.Sailing

What about you? What’s your favourite thing about summer? What are you summer plans? I’d love to see your comments.

I wish everyone a happy, relaxing summer, wherever you may be. I hope that these warm, fun memories last all winter long.
